Local governments build fiber networks

Local governments lacking faith that private sector providers are able or willing to serve their citizens' telecom needs are building their own fiber optic networks, according to this AP story.

When Companies don't deliver i think it's a great idea for the government to step in and help out. If only some towns in el dorado county would do that... but we no that will never happen especially when the campaign slogans for county officials are "keep us rural". if only we could stop that BS and move to the future

There is no conflict between land use policy and the deployment of advanced telecommunications services. In fact, it could be argued in the broader public policy scheme that such services actually decrease the need for development since they allow for employment and commerce to be conducted remotely, reducing the need for building and road expansion.
